The Atkins diet
is a low carbohydrate diet with no restrictions on fat and meat intake. Despite the fact that this diet goes against the more conventional medically approved low fat, high carbohydrate diet and has faced a lot of controversy and skepticism over the years the Atkins diet is one of the most popular diets around. Atkins diet followers appear to lose more weight even while consuming higher calories, than people on high carb diets. On the Atkins diet up to two thirds of the calorie intake may come from fat which is about double the recommendation made by health care professionals. According to the Atkins organization’s research director, Colette Heimowitz, "When carbs are the primary fuel source, there are certain risks in excessive fat consumption. But in a controlled-carb setting, when fat is the primary fuel source, the rules change. Those risk factors do not show up." Exercise is not essential for the Atkins diet.

Dietary Guidelines given by the Atkins Diet:
The Atkins diet restricts the intake of processed and refined carbohydrates such as pasta, cake, potatoes, pancakes etc. on a permanent basis. Therefore many people may have a hard time following the Atkins diet since it requires the fundamental change in a person’s eating habit over a large span of time or even permanently. This diet encourages the intake of unprocessed nutrient rich foods, such as meat, on a large scale as well as vita nutrients. Fruits and dairy products are only allowed on a limited basis.

There are three phases in the Atkins diet. The first phase (about two weeks long) is the most restrictive and is called the “induction” phase. During this phase dieters are restricted to eating only 20 grams of carbohydrate per day. The essence of this phase is to trigger the process of lipolysis / ketosis in which the body starts to burn fat during metabolism.

The second phase of the Atkins diet is less restrictive and allows the increase of permitted vegetables. During this phase a weekly increment of 5 grams of carbohydrate is allowed until the dieter reaches a desired body weight and the “critical carbohydrate level” to maintain it. This is the highest number of grams of carbohydrate an Atkins follower can ingest per day without gaining back the calories lost.

The third stage involves a lifetime of maintenance and urges Atkins followers to restrict their intake of carbohydrates to within the critical carbohydrate level indefinitely and make meal choices from Atkins recipes and foods.The Atkins diet places no restriction on the intake of saturated fat laden foods such as eggs, cheese, butter and red meat. Rather, large portions of red meat and bacon are advocated without counting the calories.

This diet has been found to be one the most popular diets around. Over the last five years there has been an immense increase in the number of dieters following the Atkins Diet. Some restaurant even offer No or Low carb food options to suit the Atkins Diet plan. Atkins Diet followers tend to lose weight at twice the rate of the normal low fat high carbohydrate diet recommended by most medical institutions. Participants of the Atkins diet have been found to lose weight without any adverse risk factors of heart disease and triglycerides, blood pressure and cholesterol levels have been found to improve. However, the post maintenance phase involves an indefinite restriction of carbohydrate intake.
