South Beach Diet
Right kind of fats/carbs       (Sign Up!!)

The South Beach Diet:This is a moderate diet described as neither “low fat” nor “low carb”. Instead it is said to promote the “right kind of fats” and the “right kind of carbs”. This immensely popular diet was developed by cardiologist Dr Arthur Agatston. Followers of this diet are supposedly said to lose weight of about 8-13 pounds in the first 2 weeks. The South Beach diet restricts the intake of highly processed carbohydrates such as those found in breads, snacks and soft drinks. Similar to the Atkins diet this is also divided into three phases and allows the gradual reintroduction of some initially forbidden foods in the last two phases. However, unlike the Atkins diet low fat dairy products such as low fat cheese, milk and yogurt are not restricted. Other low fat products however, are not recommended.

Dietary guidelines according to the South Beach Diet:
Phase one of the South Beach diet is the strictest and lasts about 14 days. During this phase followers are allowed to eat normal-sized portions of lean protein, vegetables, eggs, cheese and nuts. Carbohydrate intake is extremely limited during this period. Rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, fruits, baked food, fast food and alcohol are totally forbidden during this phase. The principle followed in this diet is that once dieters start to lose weight and carbohydrates are metabolized properly cravings for sweets and starch gradually disappear. Followers are encouraged to eat three square meals a day to eliminate hunger and cravings for sweet and high calorie carbohydrate intake.

Phase two involves the reaching of the desired weight goal and reintroduction of some high grained foods that were previously (in phase one) restricted. Phase three is all about maintenance of the achieved weight.

Exercise is not an essential element of the South Beach diet.

Success Rate:
This is among one of the five most popular diets in the country. One study of forty overweight people showed that participants of the South Beach Diet lost, on average 13.6 pounds compared to an average of 7.5 pounds lost by those on the diet recommended by the American Heart Association. It has been proven clinically that dieters following the South Beach Diet have shown a dramatic lowering of bad cholesterol and improvement in good cholesterol. Even though the initial phases of the diet are highly restrictive the maintenance phase allows room for versatility and latitude adaptive with the way we eat traditionally.
